NEW DELHI: Seventeen Indian police and officials of the forest were convicted of gang rape of a group of tribal villagers in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in 1992.
Press Trust of India said that another 100 officers were convicted Thursday of dozens of people severely beaten in the village of Dalits. Also known as the untouchables, the Dalits are considered the bottom of the caste system in India.
The incident took place as officials raid the village to find Vachathi sandalwood smuggling. The two-day strike ended with 18 women were raped and 100 people severely beaten.
Indian court issues sentences next week, although some of the accused have died in the time it took the case to make its way through India's notoriously slow justice
