Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers became the first pitcher to start a quarter century, voted the Most Valuable Player, adding that the AL honor Monday at the Cy Young Award he won last week.
Verlander received 13 of 28 first-place votes and 280 points in voting announced by the Baseball Writers Association of America.
The right runner Jacoby Ellsbury beat the Boston (242 points) and third in Toronto's Jose Bautista (231). Baptist received five first-place votes. Ellsbury had four.
"Not even in my wildest dreams I had thought of that," said Verlander. "I'd say it's a dream I can not say that because my dream had already come true -.. He was to win the Cy Young, the next dream is to win the World Series. "

Verlander won the AL pitching Triple Crown, from 24-5 with a 2.40 ERA and 250 strikeouts. He joined the Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe as the only players to win Rookie of the Year, a Cy Young and MVP.
The last starting pitcher to win the MVP was Roger Clemens in Boston in 1986. The former pitcher was reliever victory to Dennis Eckersley in 1992.
Mariners outfielder 'killed: Seattle outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and his brother were arrested on charges, Dutch police said.
Rotterdam, a police spokesman, said Patricia Wessels police were called to a house in the morning and found 24 year old native Dutchman from a stab wound bleeding. Officers and paramedics could not revive Halman.
Wessels said officers arrested Halman, 22, brother, but no charges have yet been filed.
Halman hit .230 in 35 games for the Mariners in 2011 before being an option to Triple-A Tacoma.
